For the winter and spring quarter of my senior year, I interned with the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda). I was placed with SCIDpda with the Undergraduate Community Based Internship (UCBI) program.
The UCBI program is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Washington. Non-profit organizations as well as students apply to the program and are matched through an application and interview process facilitated by the UCBI program. In order to make community based internships accessible for students, the UCBI program receives funding from the university to provide students with a stipend. The UCBI program cohort meets weekly to further enrich students’ experiences at their host sites through facilitation of conversations around equity, professional skill building, and other relevant content.
During my time at SCIDpda, I was the intern for a URM (unreinforced masonry) Grant Project. My primary responsibilities revolves around organizing and assisting in facilitating meetings for a collaborative of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). The goal of this collaborative is to be prepared with financing models for building owners for when a seismic retrofit ordinance passes through the city. As a tool for the collaborative, I created maps to visually represent retrofit status, use type, and ownership status of URMs in the CID. In addition to my responsibilities to the collaborative, I assisted in front desk operations for Hing Hay Coworks each week and created promotional materials for the Spring APA Arts & Crafts Fair.
