In the fall of my senior year, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy through the Gonzaga in Florence program. I was abroad beginning in early September 2018 and returned to the states in late December. During my time abroad, I took classes from Gonzaga University and had the opportunity to travel all around Europe. Read more about my Gonzaga classes in my ISP.
My experience with the program was unique because I was a part of the program as a child. My mom taught for the Gonzaga in Florence program when I was 10 years old so we lived abroad with her during this time. Even 11 years later, the experiences I had when I was little had stuck with me and I was able to remember a great deal about Florence as well as be able to navigate the city with ease.
During my time abroad, I learned a great deal from experiencing new cultures and my coursework at Gonzaga. Although my Italian is not very good, I also gained a better understanding and appreciation of Italian culture. All semester, I experienced how much of a privilege it is to be an American as well as a native English speaker. And along the way, I ate my heart out with food from every culture I visited and likely ate my own weight in gelato.
While abroad, I traveled to 7 countries: Italy, Vatican City, France, Spain, Scotland, England, and the Czech Republic.
